Hawk
Mountain Ranger School
What you do not need:
Previous medical training. Any training or previous
knowledge will assist in the completion of the course, but it is not
necessary. This course is classified as Advanced First Aid, however students
are instructed in various subjects above the expected knowledge level of
this certification. There is a strong emphasis on the wilderness aspects of
medical training throughout the course. It is typically considered as
equivalent to above the Emergency Responder, but not equal to the EMT-Basic. Do not purchase the AAOS Wilderness First Book on your own. The latest
copies are purchased just before summer school and include your certificate.
A medical first aid bag does not need to be purchased before or
brought to
the school. All students will carry identical bags with the option of
purchasing a similar medical bag at the end of the course. Optionally, a
personal stethoscope, BP cuff, or other tools may be brought, however the
student is personally responsible for them, and should have them labeled
clearly. It is expected that the student will be responsible for the
medic bag during the school. If the bag is lost or severe
damage occurs to the bag, the student will be held financially
responsible for the bag. The equipment is property of Hawk
Mountain Search and Rescue School, and the program incurs a large
expense providing this equipment for training. A similar medic
bag is available for purchase through the Hawk Mountain BX.
This is a very fast-paced course.
Training starts on Day 1 of the school and ends after all other squadrons
have completed their curriculums. There is little or no time to do
FA/CPR/Ranger skills that should have been done beforehand.
It is recommended to attend
staff training weekends prior to the school in order to complete Ranger 1st
Class tasks. In addition, out of state cadets may consider contacting
a CAP member with the Advanced Ranger Rating, or Expert Ranger Rating in
order to complete to Ranger 1st Class tasks. There is no exception to
completing the CPR requirements prior to the school. This information will
not be presented at the course. It is necessary to have a valid
card/certification for adult, child and infant CPR prior to receiving the
Wilderness First Aid certification. Contact your local Red Cross
Association or American Heart Association chapters for these classes.
An online course will be available immediately prior to the course.
Prerequisites:
• VALID CPR card
• Completion of a previous Hawk Mountain Summer School.
• Ranger 2nd Class rating. It is preferred to have the majority of the
Ranger 1st Class tasks completed.
• VALID 101 card with a minimum of a GTM3. Students should also complete the
FEMA Independent Study Program IS Courses 100, 200, 700 and 800. Links
to these courses are on the HMRS Standards and Evaluation page.
Completion of the basic course will have some of these requirements
completed.
• Additional fees will be incorporated into this course, including the text
for the class. This year training bags will be used, however it is up
to the student if they wish to purchase a similar bag at the completion of
the course.
• Positive mental attitude with ability to devote 110% of your attention and
energy to the course.
• Good interpersonal relationship skills.
Bridge Course:
The medic instructors have developed a 2 weekend course to put previously
trained medical professionals into the position of Hawk Mountain Ranger
School Medic Staff. Candidates for this course have the completed prerequisites,
minimally are EMT-Basics, and have the certifications on the Medic First
Class Sheet. This class is scheduled throughout the year as demand makes it
necessary. Please contact the medic staff if interested in this
opportunity.
