Interested in attending the FIELD MEDIC COURSE?

Prerequisites:
  • VALID CPR card
  • VALID first-aid card
  • Completion of a previous Hawk Mountain Summer School
  • Ranger 2nd Class rating with as many Ranger 1st Class skills completed as possible
  • VALID 101 card with a minimum of a GTM3.  Students should also complete the FEMA Independent Study Program IS Courses 100, 200, 700 and 800.  Links to these courses are on the HMRS HOME PAGE
  • If you don't know what these are you need to square this away NOW. Completion of a basic Hawk Summer School awards you some of the tasks for GTM3, GTM2 and GTM1. Insure that you have been given proper credit for this.
  • Ability to pay the additional fees for book, aid bag, medic t-shirt and possibly supplies - the exact extra fee will be announced in the Spring
  • Positive mental attitude with ability to devote 110% of your attention and energy to the course
  • Good interpersonal relationship skills
What you do not need:
  • First-aid training above basic FA. If you are an EMT or higher that is fine and this knowledge will help you. The Field Medic Course training level falls somewhere above "Emergency Responder" and below "Emergency Medical Technician" with a strong emphasis on wilderness skills.
  • Do not purchase the National Safety Council Wilderness First Book on your own.  The latest copies are purchased just before summer school and include your certificate.
  • You will NOT need your own aid bag. All students will purchase and carry identical bags.  You MAY bring your own stethoscope, bp cuff and other tools if you wish.  Insure that your name is on all of your personal items.
This is a very fast-paced course.  Training starts on Day 1 of the school and ends after all other squadrons have completed their curriculums. There is little or no time to do FA/CPR/Ranger skills that should have been done beforehand.

If you are lacking tasks for R1 you might want to consider coming to weekend at Hawk to square some of these away.  Dates of Hawk events are found on the HMRS homepage at: pawingcap.com/hawk/events.html   Or find someone with R/Adv or R/Ex ratings in your home wing.  You may be required to sacrifice significant time and money to prepare for Squadron Mike. Nothing good comes easily.  There are no exceptions to the valid CPR/FA rule.  It simply isn't fair to the other students to devote our limited training time to tutoring those who lack something so simple.  Contact your local Red Cross or American Heart Association chapters for these classes.

Feel free to contact Ranger Staff if you have any questions regarding this course.
